چکیده

After the fifties Until the beginning of the fifties his research work concentrated upon insulin and glucose, focusing, during the last two thirds of his scientific curriculum, on certain particular features of cellular biology. While studying the enzymatic aspect of carbohydrate metabolism, de Duve separated and analysed different cell components and discovered two new ones: the lysosomes in 1955 and shortly thereafter the peroxysomes. In 1960 he obtained the Francqui Prize, Belgium’s most prestigious prize for science. In 1962 he was appointed professor at the Rockefeller Institute of New York.

From Christian de Duve to Yoshinori Ohsumi: More to autophagy than just dining at home.

Christian de Duve first coined the expression "autophagy" during his seminal work on the discovery of lysosomes, which led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974. The term was adopted to distinguish degradation of intracellular components from the uptake and degradation of extracellular substances that he called "heterophagy". Studies until the 1990s were largely...

Christian de Duve: Explorer of the cell who discovered new organelles by using a centrifuge.

Christian de Duve, whose laboratory in Louvain discovered lysosomes in 1955 and defined peroxisomes in 1965, died at his home in Nethen, Belgium at the age of 95, on May 4, 2013. De Duve was the last of a group of eminent physiological chemists who, by the 1940s and 1950s, began to explore the subcellular organization of biochemical pathways and thus forged the emergence of Modern Cell Biology....

A Feeling for the Cell: Christian de Duve (1917–2013)

Christian de Duve was an internationally renowned cell biologist whose serendipitous observation while investigating the workings of insulin led to groundbreaking insights into the organization of the cell. The observation, which he once described as ‘‘essentially irrelevant to the object of our research,’’ ultimately led him to discover two organelles—the lysosome and the peroxisome—for which ...

A TRIBUTE TO Professor Christian de Duve on his 90th birthday

Molecular Medicine is an appropriate stage for a tribute to Professor C. de Duve on his 90 birthday. Indeed, the work of Christian de Duve led to an explosion in cell biology, with the discovery of lysosomes and peroxisomes and of their function. From the deciphering of the physiopathology of lysosomes followed the first molecular explanation of an intracellular genetic disorder, Pompe’s glycog...

The Legacy of a Founding Father of Modern Cell Biology: George Emil Palade (1912-2008)

George Emil Palade's scientific contributions significantly advanced the field of modern cell biology. He pioneered a multidisciplinary approach, combining cell fractionation, biochemistry, and electron microscopy, which led to the identification of the ribosome as the site of protein synthesis and elucidated the eukaryotic secretory pathway. For these accomplishments, Palade, along with Albert...
